Immaculate Conception 2023, 2024 and 2025

Over 90 percent of Malta’s population is Roman Catholic. And, in fact, Roman Catholicism is the official state religion. It goes without saying, then, that the Catholic holy feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is a public holiday.

People in Malta celebrate Immaculate Conception much like Catholics do in other countries. They attend holy mass, have a private “party” at home, go Christmas shopping, watch parades, and view fireworks displays in the dead of the night. Some also may pray or sing to Mary for hours on end.

Some may also visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the town of Zurrieq. A church existed on this site for hundreds of years, but it was originally dedicated to the Annunciation to Mary rather than to her immaculate conception.

Catholic traditions have Mary being conceived by her mother Saint Anne – her father being Saint Joachim, on 8 December. The doctrine states that she was preserved from all sin from the moment of her conception and throughout her entire life.
